Lanarkshire Is Scotland’s UFO Capital

Written by: robert - Posted in: General / News, UFO

LANARKSHIRE is Scotland’s hottest spot for UFO sightings, according to a study.

The county has had 15 unexplained sightings since 1994, claims research by Virgin Media.

But Britain’s spookiest site for UFOs is West Yorkshire, which reported 34 unexplained incidents over the same period.

The strange sightings include an incident last month when three orange objects were spotted in the night sky in Leeds.

Nick Pope, former head of the Government’s UFO project, carried out the research.

He admitted there was no explanation why certain areas were more prone to UFO sightings than others.

He added: “It’s fantastic to see local folk taking an interest in UFO activity and keeping an eye on the sky. While we have no explanation why certain places are alien hotspots, there are areas where mysterious objects are repeatedly witnessed.”

Virgin Media organised the research to mark sci-fi month on their TV On Demand service this March. Spokesman James Kydd said: “Brits are fascinated with UFOs and all things sci-fi.”

The study sees Lanarkshire rival Bonnybridge, near Falkirk, which has long claimed the title of Scotland’s UFO capital.

Experts baffled by orange UFO-AU

Written by: robert - Posted in: General / News, UFO

WHAT glows orange, scours the skyline and leaves a black plume of smoke?

Annette Van Zetten is not exactly sure what she saw shooting across the Tweed skyline on Wednesday evening, but it certainly grabbed her attention as well as the police and rescue authorities.

The Kingscliff woman was home entertaining friends about 5.30pm when she saw a bright orange object, seemingly not far from her Pacific Street home.

Fearing a plane was in trouble, Mrs Van Zetten’s friend, Greg Swaney, called police, who immediately began searching the area with the aid of a crew from the RACQ CareFlight helicopter.

Mrs Van Zetten said she was sitting on her back deck when she spotted the unidentified flying object.

“It just sort of looked like an orange glow,” she said. “The shape of it was like a flying saucer.

“It didn’t look like a plane. It was definitely going down and then we saw black smoke so that’s when we thought perhaps a plane was on fire.”

Ms Van Zetten said it was hard to judge exactly how large or how far away the object was.

“We don’t know how big it was. We thought maybe it was about 10km (away), maybe around Cabarita. It was hard to tell.”

As airfields and airports in the region began accounting for their aircraft on Wednesday night, police received reports of further sightings of the orange glow.

With no reports of missing aircraft, the helicopter search was called off after about half an hour.

Police from Kingscliff, Tweed Heads, Murwillumbah and Byron Bay continued looking for any sign of the object before the search was called off.

Sergeant Rob Taylor of Tweed Heads police said it was likely an object had streaked across the sky on Wednesday. “There is some credibility given that a few people have reported seeing something,” he said. He said police were fairly confident the object was not a plane but that it may have been a meteor.

“We’ve got no craters or anything like that,” he said.

Byron Bay police conducted an early morning search of bushland near the beach yesterday morning, with no results.

Sydney Observatory astronomy educator Mel Hulbert said although there was no record of major meteor activity on Wednesday night, the light in the sky over Kingscliff was likely to have been caused by a type of meteor known as a bolide.

“There are a couple of meteor showers that are running at the moment, but neither of them peaked yesterday,” she said.

“Probably what we’ve seen is a bolide. A bolide is just a larger piece of debris. Meteors are generally not that big. Most of the ones we see are about dust grain-sized.

“Usually most of the meteors that we see burn up completely. Having said that, we estimate that we get a rock fall to Earth once every two hours.”

Gettysburg ghost-hunting summit cancelled

Written by: robert - Posted in: General / News, Ghosts, Paranormal Events

The ghost-hunting summit that was expected to attract more than 500 paranormal investigators to Gettysburg in June has been canceled.

The Gettysburg National Military Park’s policy against organized paranormal investigations on the battlefield is the main reason for the cancellation of the G4 Summit, organizer Kerry Eble-Keller said.

“It was just not what it could be,” Eble-Keller said Tuesday.

Had things gone as planned, it would have been the first year for the event. As many as 540 people were registered to attend, he said.

Efforts to find homes and businesses in the area open to paranormal investigation were met with limited success, and without the battlefield as an option, “we realized we were just going to disappoint a lot of people,” Eble-Keller said.

Park spokeswoman Katie Lawhon has said the park’s policy against ghost hunting stems from a broader policy of only allowing organized activities on the battlefield that support the mission of the park. Individuals can, however, conduct investigations if they do not disrupt other visitors or damage park resources.
“We’ve tried to be very clear about our position on commercial ghost hunting and paranormal activities and also large-scale events in the park,” Lawhon said Tuesday. “It all comes down to our mission.”

That mission is “to preserve and protect the resources associated with the Battle of Gettysburg and the Soldiers National Cemetery, and to provide the understanding of the events that occurred here, within the context of American history.”

Activities consistent with that mission can be granted special-access permits, but events like the G4 Summit do not qualify, Lawhon said.

“Our focus continues to be talking about the history of the Battle of Gettysburg and the soldiers who sacrificed their lives here,” she said. “We’re going to continue to spend our time on that.”

Before he learned of the park’s policy, Eble-Keller said he began organizing and publicizing the event through MySpace.com.

Eble-Keller has said the ghost hunters wanted to conduct paranormal investigations on some of the deadliest spots of the Gettysburg Battlefield, including Devil’s Den, Little Round Top and the field of Pickett’s Charge.

When that fell through, effort went into finding other places in the Gettysburg and Hanover area open to paranormal investigation.

But only about a dozen homes and businesses volunteered - far fewer than what would be needed to occupy more than 500 ghost hunters, Eble-Keller said.

“We came up way, way short,” he said.

Besides, the battlefield is the main draw for ghost hunters, he added.

“That’s the main reason they wanted to come to Gettysburg,” Eble-Keller said.

E-mails went out Monday informing would-be investigators of the cancellation.

Whether some people will still show up is unknown.

“A lot of people made motel reservations,” Eble-Keller said. “It’s up to them if they still want to come on their own.”

Most reactions so far have been ones of disappointment, he said.

“Other people say that they feel sorry for us because we put so much hard work into it,” Eble-Keller said. “I have more sympathy, I think, than anger.”

Ghost Hunters Take On Elkton

Written by: robert - Posted in: General / News, Ghosts

ELKTON - There’s much more going on in Elkton than meets the eye.

At least according to Sara Liskey, 44, and John Frye, 46, local ghost hunters and founders of Valley Paranormal Investigations. For the town’s 100th birthday, they are inviting Elkton residents to submit ghost stories, which they will professionally investigate.

Elkton’s history provides a fertile hunting ground for paranormal activity, Frye said.

“The whole area was a major part of the Civil War,” Frye said. “If there’s ever a place you would find a ghost, it would be where hundreds of people have died.”

But even with the ample opportunities for ghost activity, both Frye and Liskey always run into skeptics.

“We’ve had accusations, and some people refuse to believe,” Frye said. “Even if they don’t believe, people are curious.”

Electromagnetic Fields And Orbs

In a “nonorganized way,” Frye said, he has been ghost-hunting for almost 40 years.

He and Liskey are working together, as he explained, because he’s good with the equipment and “she attracts things.”

When they go hunting, they bring a camera and a voice recorder. They are trying to acquire an electromagnetic field detector to help them.

“The idea behind an EMF detector is that, if a being is trying to manifest, it has to draw its energy from somewhere,” Frye said. “So there would be a magnetic field where there shouldn’t be one, like in the middle of the woods.”

But in Elkton, Liskey and Frye said they were more likely to see beings in houses, since some were used as hospitals during the Civil War.

They recently ventured into the town’s historic Miller-Kite House during the day, where it is rumored that a playful spirit named “Cecil” lives, but are hoping to go back in the night for further exploration.

Spirits can appear as partial body apparition, or an orb, “a ball of energy with a defined edge,” Frye said.

But, Frye said, he and Liskey aren’t frightened to do what they do, with good reason.

“Things may go bump in the night, but I’ve never been injured,” he said. “There’s nothing really to be afraid of.”

Confronted with strange happenings, their minds don’t always jump to otherworldly conclusions.

“We always go back during daylight and look for reasonable explanations, like a window or a loose door,” Liskey said.

No ‘Gift-Wrapped Ghosts’

After taking submissions and then investigating claims, the team will reveal what they found in a party held in Elkton. They have not scheduled a date yet because they don’t know how many claims they will get, or how long each investigation might take.

“Anyone can submit stories,” Frye said. “Claims are claims and we take them all.”

They don’t charge people who get their haunted claims investigated - but claimants won’t be guaranteed a ghost either.

“If you charge a fee, people expect this gift-wrapped ghost,” Liskey said. “It can hurt our credibility if we always find one.”

“We just promise honesty,” Frye said. “But some people want their homes to be haunted, and can be disappointed.”

To bring out the ghost, Liskey and Frye start out nice, by introducing themselves and trying to talk.

If the spirit is a no-show, “we try to instigate and bring them out …. we can become less polite if they do not appear,” Liskey said.

For example, to bring out a spirit they call “Charlie,” who was particularly stubborn about appearing, they sat on his grave and hurled insults into the cemetery air.

Although Liskey said he didn’t appear, she felt his presence when she tried to stand up but was met with heavy legs.

Frye and Liskey did offer a piece of advice to would-be ghost hunters.

“Don’t go out trespassing and don’t do anything unsafe or reckless,” Frye said.

Liskey added: “Remember, they’re dead. You’re not.”
