The 5 Most Common Types Of Hauntings
Ghost stories have been amongst the most popular literature in the world for centuries, with stories of hauntings and possessions delighting and yet scaring the reader into wanting more and more information. Society still wants more and more information about such events today but we are lucky enough to have access to research in addition to stories, tales and rumours. As such, the haunting of a character in a book can now be classified into one of five types of haunting, much like events in reality can also be classified in the same way.
Extensive research and new technology has gone some way to proving that there are five common types of haunting and also that they are distinct types that show marked differences from each other. A haunting is no longer just a haunting but may be any one of the following five types outlined below:
1. Residual Haunting
This is the most common form of haunting, or at least it is based on extensive research. A residual haunting often results from a serious event in the life of one of the former residents in a building, and that is almost always a tragic death. The haunting is often referred to as “on a loop” because it literally repeats over and over again as if the cycle were looped together. This can occur in any type of building but is most often found in residential homes, both old and new.
2. Intelligent Haunting
This is the second most common form of haunting and the one in which the ghost will attempt to communicate with the living. The ghost can interact with the living or the environment because it is fully aware of where it is and what it is doing. You may hear voices or footsteps, see or hear items moving, witness lights coming on by themselves or many other strange occurrences that can only be explained by an intelligent haunting. These signs occur because this type of haunting wants to be seen and acknowledged.
3. Demonic Haunting
This is another of the five most common haunting types but the rarest reported type. This is because a demon is thought to be from another world and is not believed to take a specific form. Instead, demonic haunting is designed to weaken the victim emotionally so that the demon can possess him or her. Demons have unbelievable strength and may actually physically assault their victims without being seen. Scary noises and terrible smells are also common signs of a demonic haunting.
4. Poltergeist Haunting
The poltergeist haunting is one of the most dreaded types of haunting because it can scare people no end but most poltergeist hauntings only tend to target one individual. Poltergeists are spirits that are often angry and will make its presence known by making noises, knocking, moving objects and even breaking objects. This activity often happens when the individual targeted by the poltergeist is present but may not otherwise occur.
5. Portal Haunting
Finally, portal haunting is not necessarily a new thing but it is very little known about it and so some people do not accept that portal haunting exists. These hauntings are the result of an entity travelling via a doorway to another dimension or world. It is commonly accepted that the energies that travel can appear as orbs, lights, mists or even creatures. In more simple terms, haunting that does not fit into the above four categories are thought to be portal haunting. However, because little is known about portal haunting, it may not appear in common lists of haunting types.
